Sister Cities Projects
Current Sister City Projects include:
- Fighting mining – The organized communities in the Department of Chalatenango, El Salvador, feel that they are facing the most dangerous threat to their survival since the war. This threat comes in the form of two Canadian mining Companies, Au Martinique Silver and Intrepid Minerals, which have been issued licenses by the Salvadoran government to explore the area for gold and other precious metals. If these explorations prove promising, subsequent licenses for “exploitation” would then be issued to these or other companies. Here’s more about mining...
- The ACT network – In response to the ongoing need for vigilant defense of human rights in our hemisphere, PICA has brought back an old idea, the urgent response network. We call it the ACT (All Call Together) network. Network members pledge to take one action each month. They get a monthly call from a fellow PICA member asking them to respond – by making a phone call or sending a letter or fax – to a human rights alert. We know from experience that these simple acts can make a real difference.
The ACT network is a great way to contribute to the struggle for human rights, even if your time is limited, or if you just can't stand the thought of going to another meeting. We're at a critical time in El Salvador's history, so now is the time to sign up. Please pitch in (from your own home) and contact us to join ACT
Delegations – more than 20 delegations of adult and youth activists have visited Bangor’s sister city of Carasque in the mountains of El Salvador, and several delegations of Carasqueños have come to Bangor. Our next delegation (winter 2010) will learn about how Salvadorans use popular education as a key ingredient in creating and sustaining their movement for social change. More about our delegations to El Salvador...
- Scholarships – we support a community-run program that helps youth in Carasque and neighboring communities get high school and university educations. More about the scholarship program…
- Supporting economic alternatives, including the Carasque Sewing and Arpillera Cooperatives.
